Watch 12 Lithuanian short films in the virtual Torino Short Film Market 2020

This year Torino Short Film Market 2020 goes online! The 5th edition of the market will take place on 17-21 November. For the second year in a row Lithuanian short film agency “Lithuanian Shorts” presents a carefully prepared collection of the newest Lithuanian short films for the online video library.

This year the virtual market’s platform is dedicated to the accredited film industry representatives only, and will provide an opportunity to watch different film selections, including a programme with 12 films by the new generation of Lithuanian filmmakers.

Torino Short Film Market (TSFM) is one of the leading industry events in Europe for short films. The TSFM is active on several fronts: connecting sellers and buyers, developing short-film offshoots, and short films and VR content market. This year’s programme of the market: “Short Comedies”, “VR Stories”, “Distributors Meet Buyers”, „Oltercorto“ and “Pitch Your Fest!”. It is organised by the Centro del Corto – National Short Film Centre in collaboration with Torino Film Festival and Torino Film Lab.

In the near future, after another painful break-up, young woman named Alex applies to the institution where people are taught to live in solitude. During one of the training phases, Alex is introduced to a young employee named Kaste, whom she becomes very close with. However the essence of the training is to unexpectedly and firmly develop the ability to live alone.

Man tries to recreate himself by how he views himself, but this broken reflection only gets lost in the uncanny valley.

 

The Old Man | dir. Elena Rožukaitė | 30 min. | 2020

Vaiva has a dream to live in Spain with her Spanish boyfriend but needs to save up some money for a new start. She begins working as a nurse for a disabled man in a remote village in Lithuania. Time passes by slowly here, and the Spanish lover doesn’t pick up the phone for days.

A middle-aged man named Kolia receives a letter with four choices. One of them leads to the birth of a baby to his previously infertile wife. At first, Kolia thinks that he finally controls his fate. But when the other letters arrive, Kolia realizes he can no longer avoid making a choice.

 

Snow Shelter | dir. Robertas Nevecka | 16 min. | 2020

Frigid winter in a war-devastated, present-day city. Several years have passed since the destruction, and the city is being slowly rebuilt. A thirty-year-old Kostas is living as a squatter in an apartment with a group of strangers. He struggles to survive and to find a little comfort in this rough setting. One night he nearly burns the flat down, hoping for a warmer sleep. His roommates start hating him and Kostas has to find another shelter.

A secretive men’s inner thoughts confronts against the reality.

 

Beneath the Powder | dir. Ieva Morkūnaitė | 12 min. | 2020

Late evening. Last works at a restaurant kitchen. Meanwhile at the pantry, confectioner Deividas is selling drugs. At the same time, while waiting for him, his little sister Algimantė secretly tastes sweets. One because of sugar, the other one for cocaine, but they both end up at the same party.

 

Combing | dir. Eglė Davidavičė | 5 min.| 2019

Combing is a meditative act leading to contemplation and introspection. It is an animated self-portrait about memory and relationship with the other sculpted in motion and time. Hair becomes a symbolic thread that connects past and present, memories and the current relationship between father and daughter.

 

Golden minutes | dir. Saulius Baradinskas | 10 min. | 2019

It’s a story of a middle-aged man who decides to kill himself but is rescued by a heart attack. As Liudas is laying on the ground without any signs of life, the street around him is lively as usual. Nobody including an ambulance driving by pays any attention to Liudas, whose “golden minutes” are ticking away.

 

Life After Death | dir. Paulius Stankevičius | 15 min. | 2019

Tortured by a premonition, Danute is preparing for the worst. Knowing when she will die to the exact hour, Danute organises the last supper to give her family a chance to bid their farewell. However, as soon as her son Viktoras arrives with his pregnant wife, strange things are afoot turning the dinner into a catastrophe. After the disastrous evening the apartment becomes empty and life after death ensues. Was it worth listening to her gut feeling?

 

On time | dir. Jorė Janavičiūtė | 19 min. | 2019

Julė is 27. She is always late. She is about to become a judge, but her vice always keeps getting in her way. Expecting to solve her problem, Julė starts taking a driving course and meets a driving instructor Artūras. That’s when the real cause of her problem appears.

 

The Contest | dir. Saulė Bliuvaitė | 26 min. | 2019

It’s the first Christmas without her husband for a recently divorced Silvija. When her two grown-up children gather for a Christmas Eve dinner, she announces that her new boyfriend will join them. Although greeting a strange man is not very pleasant, the children try to accept these changes in their mother’s life. However, her children come to realize that Silvija’s “new beginning” is just a mask for loneliness.
