Virtually lost in self destruction and relegated to the reserve cast as a substitute for the primo uomo, an opera singer has to miss routinely an extra premiere. While ‘Pagliacci’ by Leoncavallo is being performed on the stage, the singer gets involved into a messy entanglement of debt-clenching, in which he becomes one in a curious detective story and has finally to play a decisive role in it. His desires, which he tended only in his personal secret fancies, take a very real shape and engulf him with a crushing force.
